If you’re using multiple brokers to compare energy costs, here’s some useful information so you aren’t caught out.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?
Unfortunately we are finding that some brokers are quoting customers on ‘pass-through contracts’ in an attempt to try and make their quotes look more competitive. However these contracts don’t include all costs, and so some customers are signing up, thinking they are cheaper, only to be stung with higher bills.
This is often when a customer is using more than one broker to gather and compare prices, because it can be a tactic of some brokers to try and simply win the business by making the rates look more competitive than they actually are.
WHAT IS A PASS-THROUGH CONTRACT?
This is a contract that passes-through certain elements of an electricity supply, rather than them being included in the unit rates. That could be Renewables Obligation, FiT, Balancing and Settlement or a number of other charges that would make up your unit rate in a fully fixed and inclusive contract.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Essentially you can’t compare a fully fixed price against a pass-through contract without forecasting the other charges. Of course if you want a pass-through contract, that’s totally fine, however we’re finding many customers sign these contracts after them being presented as ‘cheaper’, only to discover these charges are added onto their bills, often adding thousands of pounds of unexpected costs.
It’s like trying to compare two cars by just looking at the make and model, when of course you would actually take into account the age, mileage, quality and numerus other things to really compare like for like to make an informed decision.
We can help you by comparing fairly. If we aren’t as competitive we’ll be honest and straightforward.
