Which businesses can raise a dispute with the Energy Ombudsman about suppliers?

Changes in October 2024 have now opened the door for many more businesses to take their energy supplier disputes to the Energy Ombudsman.

From 1st October 2024, business that satisfy one or more of the criteria below can resolve disputes with energy suppliers by raising their complaint to the Energy Ombudsman:

  • Have fewer than 50 employees of their full-time equivalent AND an annual turnover of up to £6.5m or a balance sheet total of £5m, OR
  • Use up to 200,000 kWh of electricity per year (if an electricity complaint), OR
  • Use up to 500,000 kWh of gas per year (if a gas complaint).

Prior to October 2024, only micro-businesses could resolve disputes via the Energy Ombudsman.

The changes now allow many more business to obtain free assistance is their disputes with energy suppliers.

You can raise a dispute with the Energy Ombudsman completely free of charge.

At what point can I raise the dispute with the Energy Ombudsman?

You must raise the complaint with your supplier in the first instance. If the complaint has not been resolved within 8 weeks, or your supplier has sent you a deadlock letter, you can raise the dispute to the Energy Ombudsman.
